Elden Ring mod loaders, such as Mod Engine 2 or Elden Mod Loader (EML), allow players to add custom mods to the game. While these mod loaders are designed to be non-intrusive, there are times when you may need to uninstall them, either to restore the game to its original state or troubleshoot conflicts. Uninstalling requires careful steps to remove all mod files, configurations, and loaders without affecting your saved progress.
Step 1 Close Elden Ring and the Mod Loader
Before starting the uninstallation process, make sure the game and any associated mod tools are completely closed.
- Exit Elden Ring if it is running.
- Check for any mod launcher or mod loader processes in the system tray. Right-click and select Exit or Quit.
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl, Shift, and Esc.
- Navigate to the Processes tab and ensure that all processes related to the mod loader, such as
ModEngine2.exeorEldenModLoader.exe, are ended. Right-click and select End Task.
This step ensures no files are in use and can be safely removed.
Step 2 Locate the Mod Loader Installation Folder
Mod loaders for Elden Ring are usually installed in the game directory. The default paths are often:
Steam InstallationC:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elden Ring\
From Epic Games LauncherC:\Program Files\Epic Games\EldenRing\
Inside the game folder, you will typically see the following related to mod loaders:
ModEngine.inior other configuration filesModEngine2.exeorEldenModLoader.exemodsfolder containing all installed mods
Step 3 Remove the Mod Loader Files
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the Elden Ring installation folder.
- Locate the mod loader executable files (
ModEngine2.exe,EldenModLoader.exe) and delete them. - Delete the
ModEngine.inior equivalent configuration files. - Delete the
modsfolder entirely if you want a complete cleanup of all installed mods.
This step restores the game files to their original state while keeping your main game installation intact.
Step 4 Remove User Configuration and Cache Files
Some mod loaders create additional configuration files or cache in your user folders. Removing these ensures a fully clean uninstall.
Windows
- Press the Windows Key and R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
%appdata%and press Enter. - Navigate to any folder associated with the mod loader, for example,
EldenModLoaderorModEngine2. - Delete the entire folder to remove residual settings and cache.
Step 5 Verify Game Integrity (Optional but Recommended)
After removing the mod loader and its files, it is a good idea to verify the game integrity to ensure no core game files were altered.
Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Elden Ring and select Properties.
- Go to the Local Files tab and select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
- Click the three dots next to Elden Ring and select Verify.
This will repair any files accidentally altered during mod installation or removal.
Step 6 Restart Your PC
After completing all deletion steps, restart your computer. This ensures any temporary processes or cache files are cleared.
Once restarted, launch Elden Ring. The game should now run in a fully unmodded state, as if it was freshly installed.
Additional Notes
- Back up your saves before removing mods, even though most mod loaders do not modify save files.
- If you only want to remove certain mods but keep the loader, delete only the specific
.dllfiles in themodsfolder. - For complex mod setups, review any custom scripts or third-party tools that may have installed additional files in the game folder.
