Complete Guide: How to Uninstall Sims 4 Mods (Windows, Mac)

Mods in The Sims 4 enhance gameplay, but sometimes they need to be removed to fix issues, conflicts, or perform a clean reinstall. This guide explains how to remove mods completely on Windows and macOS, including how to clean leftover files safely.

Step 1: Locate the Mods Folder

Windows and Mac default location:

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
  • This folder contains all custom content, script mods, and user-created packages.
  • Script mods usually have .ts4script extensions.
  • Other custom content uses .package files.

Step 2: Disable Mods in Game Settings (Optional but Recommended)

Before manually deleting mods, it is recommended to disable them from the game to prevent errors on launch.

  1. Open The Sims 4.
  2. Go to Options > Game Options > Other.
  3. Uncheck:
    • Enable Custom Content and Mods
    • Script Mods Allowed
  4. Save settings and close the game.

This ensures no mods are actively loaded when deleting files.

Step 3: Delete or Move Mods

Option A: Delete All Mods (Full Removal)

  1. Navigate to the Mods folder as described in Step 1.
  2. Select all contents.
  3. Move to Recycle Bin / Trash or permanently delete.
  4. Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash to free up space.

Option B: Remove Specific Mods

  1. Open the Mods folder.
  2. Identify mods causing issues (check filenames or folder names).
  3. Move or delete only those specific files.

Tip: Keep a backup folder on your desktop for mods you may want to reinstall later.

Step 4: Remove Cache Files (Optional for Complete Cleanup)

Sometimes cached files keep old mods loaded. Removing cache ensures a fully clean start.

Cache file locations:

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4

Delete the following files if present:

  • localthumbcache.package
  • cache files inside the Caches folder (if it exists)

Do not delete save files unless you want to reset your progress.

Step 5: Restart The Sims 4

  1. Launch the game after deletion.
  2. Check Options > Game Options > Other to ensure Custom Content and Script Mods are enabled again if desired.
  3. Only reinstall mods that are compatible with your current game version to avoid crashes.

Additional Notes

  • Always backup mods before removing, especially script mods with saved data dependencies.
  • Deleting mods does not remove base game files.
  • If you experience crashes after removing mods, try repairing the game via the EA App or Steam.
